Joined B.H.P. as assistant manager 1898, became general manager 1899 and resigned 1921. During changeover of the Company "from silver to steel", it was he who conceived the iron-and-steel project and establishment of the steel factories at Newcastle. He was awarded a C.B.E. in 1919.
